The School Library is not all about checking out books. Throughout the year, there are several different activities and programs held in and through the library.



Read Across America - Read Across America is an annual reading initiative sponsored by the NEA (National Education Association). One part of the project is National Read Across America Day, an observance held in the USA on March 2, the birthday of author & illustrator, Dr. Seuss. NEA website for Read Across America



TV Turnoff (for all students K-5, runs October - late May )

This Ultimate challenge, soon to be in its 9th year here at South Mountain, asks students to reduce or eliminate their screen (tv/movies/computers/video games) time on school days/nights for the entire school year . Students are awarded prizes based on the level of the challenge that is completed.






Battle of the Books
(grades 3-5, January-June)

For students in Grades 3-5, BOTB is based on a national program where students read from a given list of books, and then in teams, answer questions, in a quiz bowl format, based on the books' plots, characters, themes, settings, etc. Click on the link above for information about this year's program: book lists, rules, etc.
